Attorney Martin George, who is out on $150,000 bail after being charged with grievous sexual assault and indecent assault, is threatening to sue the Trinidad Express newspaper over its reporting of the matter.
This follows a headline titled “Indecent George” on the front page which George’s attorneys says “jeopardises in a most fundamental way our client’s right to a fair trial, and is a shameless and deliberate and cheeky act of pre-trial publicity.”
The letter, sent by JD Sellier + Co, further stated that it was based on the fact that George has noticed a “continuation of a pattern of behaviour by the OCM Group as on 10, July 2025, on the front page of its online TV6 news brief, a photograph of our client is plastered alongside a headline which had nothing at all to do with our client, which headline read “Crime Wrap: Pensioner’s Body.”
“Again, it is unarguable that this tarnishes our client’s character and reputation as, of course, there was no pensioner’s body found at our client’s business place and if it is not sloppy careless journalism, it is cheap sensationalism using our client’s picture to make an impact, and to drive clicks recklessly indifferent to the malicious falsehoods and the damage done to our client’s name, character, credit and reputation,” the letter added.
George, through his attorneys, is calling on the Express to immediately cease and desist from publishing any further defamatory statements concerning their client; issue a retraction and apology; and to pay a proper and suitable sum as damages.
One day after being charged George, at a media conference on July 10, said he was, “One hundred per cent innocent.”
Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the leak of confidential information in case.
The move came in response to statements from the Law Association of T&T regarding the purported release of the complainant’s name, image, and the contents of her statement.
Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has ordered an urgent probe to determine how this confidential information entered the public domain.
