at the end of 2024, Six Flags has given more notice to theme park goers about which parks will be closing.
Don’t panic yet New Jersey natives, it looks like Great Adventure is safe. The
might just be enticing more than enough Jersey folks into the park.
Unfortunately, Six Flags fans in Maryland and California will have to seek thrills elsewhere. It’s always a let-down to visitors and the local community when a fan-favorite amusement park shuts down, and that is what is happening with both Six Flags America and Six Flags California’s Great America.
Here is what you need to know about the fate of these two theme parks, including when and why Six Flags plans to close both parks.
When are Six Flags America and Six Flags California’s Great America closing?
Six Flags America, which is located in Bowie, Maryland, is closing at the end of 2025,
. Hurricane Harbor Maryland will also close at the end of the season. Per the
, both Six Flags America and the Hurricane Harbor water park will stop full weekday operations on Friday, August 22, with the exception of Monday, September 1 (open for Labor Day).
Both parks will be open on weekends through the end of August, then Six Flags America will remain open into the fall for Fright Fest.
The last weekend date Hurricane Harbor Maryland is operating is September 6, while Six Flags America is open weekends until Sunday, November 2, 2025.
Fans of Six Flags California’s Great America, located in Santa Clara, California, will have a little more time to enjoy the theme park, as it will not shut its doors until at least the end of 2027.
Why are Six Flags America and Six Flags California’s Great America closing?
Six Flags America is closing due to the land being slated for redevelopment.
“As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” said Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman
“After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment,”
Six Flags California Great America, on the other hand, is closing because its lease is expiring soon, and the company is not planning on extending it anytime soon.
“Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to extend that lease, that park’s last year without that extension would be after the ‘27 season,” Six Flags chief financial officer Brian Witherow said about the troubled theme park at the company’s most recent Investor Day,
Witherow added that both parks were “very low on the ranking of margins.”
