Soggy start to the week expected with excessive rain possible
The WINK Weather Authority is monitoring an area with a 20% chance of tropical development in the Gulf, which was advised by the National Hurricane Center Saturday afternoon.
This chance of development is because of a low-pressure system that will be moving toward Florida on Monday. This will have a chance of developing once it passes over Florida and enters the northeastern Gulf. From there, it will continue to move away, as it heads west into the Gulf.
Regardless of development, it will bring Southwest Florida extra tropical moisture, which will increase our chances of rain for the first half of this week.
The Weather Prediction Center has Southwest Florida under a level 2 risk of seeing excessive rainfall on Monday and Tuesday. Periods of heavy rain and storms can be expected, meaning that we have the potential to see flash flooding. Rainfall totals are expected to be between 1-4 inches throughout our area over the next 3 days with isolated higher rainfall totals possible. The latest guidance shows that we could see 4-6 inches of rain over the next 5 days.
Be weather aware over the next few days. If there is flooding in your area, avoid driving through floodwaters.
On a positive note, this rainfall will improve our drought conditions. Even though we've seen consistent afternoon storms, most of Southwest Florida is still seeing dry conditions. Also, this rainfall will cool us off slightly to the upper 80s to lower 90’s.
