4 years is a long time in sport. And when you are a fast bowler, more so. You don’t really know if you have the same skillset and the mind is often ridden with self doubt after a long lay off. Some write you off and it can impact a players’ mental health. For Jofra Archer it couldn’t have been easy. Multiple injuries and surgeries past, he is back to playing for England at Lord’s in a Test match. And when you have a packed house cheering for you, it makes for a great atmosphere.

Archer with ball in hand at Lord’s was a sight. And it did not take him long to make impact. With the third ball of his spell, he squared up Jaiswal and had drawn first blood. It was a ball that pitched on leg stump, came in down the slope and got the outside edge of Jaiswal’s bat to land safely in the hands of Harry Brook. Soon after the slip fielders went up in celebration, did Jofra start his run of joy.

He literally had no control over his celebration and was a man possessed. Four years of hard work was gradually giving way to relief and he was finding it hard to control himself. It was sport at its best. A fast bowler who had just bowled a 90 mph delivery to get a top batter out was running at breakneck speed in celebration. All of Lord’s had stood up for Jofra and when he finally went and gave Shoaib Bashir a hug, it was a mix of jubilation and relief combined in one. That’s what makes Test cricket what it is. Pure emotion and intense drama. He was smelling blood and was going flat out. Each time he ran in, Lord’s ran in with him. The fans were making noise and for the batters it couldn’t have been easy. While it is easy to fault Karun Nair for failing to convert the starts, the truth is he did superbly well to play off that Archer spell. Archer was clocking 150 kmph and for the new batter it couldn’t have been easy. Nair and Rahul negotiated it well and that’s when India found breath.

If Archer was the story for England, it was Rahul for India with Karun as the support cast. It would have been fitting if Karun Nair had got a fifty. He deserved it after all the fight. But then that’s what sport is all about. A stunning one handed blinder from Joe Root cut short his effort and it was a freakish catch. In the morning KL Rahul dropped an easy one of Jamie Smith at slip and in the afternoon Joe Root plucked one out of thin air to dismiss Karun. Smith, the man in form, got a lucky break while Nair, after doing all the hard work, had to go back for 40. But then India will know how important Karun’s innings was. It meant the captain and vice captain both came out when the ball had lost its shine and it was easier to bat. Such things are hugely important in the context of the match and Karun deserves credit for it.

Rahul on the other end was steadfast. Composed and resolute, he is India’s man on day 3. The resumption of Archer versus Rahul is real box office and whoever wins this one could have helped his team steal a march on the game.
